特刊介绍
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) such as heart attacks, ischemic stroke, and peripheral artery disease remain the main cause of death worldwide, despite substantial advances in interventional treatment and risk factor management. Crosstalk between the immune system and the cardiovascular system drives CVDs. Atherosclerosis, the main underlying pathology of CVDs, has been established as a chronic inflammatory condition. The concept of “residual inflammatory risk” offers potential targeting strategies for cardiovascular prevention. Likewise, compelling evidence implicates the immune system as an acute contributor to ischemic heart disease and heart failure. Many levels of crosstalk have been identified, yet, the precise networks and mechanisms are not completely understood, resulting in very few immunotherapeutic treatments for CVDs in the clinic.
In this Special Collection, we aim to assemble work that contributes to the discovery and understanding of novel cellular, molecular, and metabolic mechanisms in cardiovascular immunology, including but not limited to:
- studies of alarmins, cytokines, and chemokines;
- interactions between immune cells and endothelial cells, cardiac stromal cells, cardiomyocytes, or cardiac macrophages;
- changes in immunometabolism;
- studies that address the promises (but also potential limitations) of emerging therapeutic targets in this area.
The goal is to summarize recent advances in this highly dynamic and exciting field of biomedical research that will be useful for both basic cardiovascular scientists and immunologists, as well as translational scientists and clinicians. COVID-19-related contributions impacting the cardiovascular system are explicitly encouraged. We welcome Original Research Articles, Perspectives, Hypothesis Articles, and Review Articles.
